Rental car rates at IAH, WTH?!?

I booked a car back in November for my upcoming trip to Houston (Jan 31 - Feb 9). My reservation is confirmed at 290, taxes included, for a 4 door compact vehicle with Thrifty. For the past couple of months, I have been searching rates with the hopes of getting a larger vehicle, but the rates are almost $150 more per rental period, even for the Compact vehicle. Is there some major event going on in Houston during this time period or is there a shortage of rental cars? I’m definitely making sure not to cancel the reservation I currently have now!
I should add that the rate increases that I was seeing occurred about a week after I reserved way back in November, so I don’t think the "Well, you reserved way in advance" answer holds water.
Also, the locations that are not located anywhere near the airport are reflecting roughly the same rates.

rentals cost more when you get them at the airport. Go with enterprise rental. Get a cab from the airport to the nearest enterprise that is a off of their property and your rate will drop quicker. The price may not be so bad, but it’s all the taxes you will pay for renting the vehicle.

  2. Your rate is cheaper because you booked well in advance of your reservation. Car rental pricing is based on availability. The closer you get to the rental date, the less cars available, the higher the prices. Congrats on being smart and booking in advance!
