How long to recheck bags in Houston IAH?

Hi everybody,

I will be traveling from Europe to Cancun via Houston IAH and I will be flying with 2 different and non-partner airlines. This means I will have to recheck all my luggage to get on the 2nd flight.

I have been reading comments about the IAH airport and I have understood the following so far:
- Flying in with Air France I should be arriving at Terminal D.
- Flying out with Continental Airlines (to Cancun) I should be leaving from Terminal E
- IAH is a big airport, "Texas size" as some described it so you should plan enough time to go from one terminal to another (even using the internal train)
- I am not sure where the baggage claim area is… one for each terminal or a central one (if so where is it located?) ?

Now taking into account all that my question is:
How long should I plan to get through the baggage-claim / recheck / security check process so that I will be in time for the second flight?

International Flights come into D or E. Air France is a partner with continental so there is a chance you could land from your European flight terminal E. You should allow time to get through customs as well as re-check bags. The international flights have their own baggage claim and re-check area, so this will save you some time. I would still allow at least 6 hours between the flights. It should only take a couple hours to make a flight change, but you do not want to run into trouble if your Europe leg gets delayed. IAH has a number of restaurants, shops, and even wifi available (wifi does have a fee though). It is not a bad airport to be caught in. Also you should be able to walk from D to E or E to D easily; there is no need to take the inter-terminal train.

  1. for international flights at less 6 hours. That will give you times to pick up and recheck in your luggage and security checkpoints

    Have fun in Cancun
