Airports in DC are referred to as Dulles and Reagan, not National. I have had to fly in there way too many times. Bush is referred to as Bush.

I guess if you’re going to rant and rave about something you might as well make sure it’s something you know nothing about. LOL

from orange county calif~ my sis moved to the woodlands and i visit her and that is the airport i use. i dont like it. it is confusing…i am used to JOHN WAYNE AIRPORT OR LAX

I have never heard it called "Intercontinental" it has always been referred by locals as Bush. Regardless of his political stance he has done a lot for Houston the place that he is proud to call home. What should it been called Clinton International?

75% of The Woodlands is named after the Mitchells and they are still living. Tons of schools are named after people that too are still living.

First, don’t you think your kind of late? It’s been called this for a really long time! Also, people do refer to it as "George Bush Intercontinental Airport."
Second, do you really think that he told them to call it that? As his last act as president do you think he said "and the Intercontinental Airport in Houston will now be named after me"? Give me a break! He had nothing to do with that naming of it except that he accepted it b/c it is an honor! The reason this airport was chosen is because he lives here.
This was a silly question, and if it really bothered you then you should have asked this years ago… you know, when it happened!!

Um, I think if you listen around town, you’ll hear it called Bush more than Intercontinental. And he didn’t go on a campaign to solicit for the airport to be named after him, so you can’t really call it selfish. It was named in his honor. I think you’re just bummed because you hate the name George Bush.

Your opinion has been noticed and noted.

The City of Houston named the airport after the former president. Why? Because of the recognition he brought the city during and after his presidency. The G7 Summit was held here. The ‘92 Republican convention was held here. The two aforementioned items happened during the Bush 41 presidency. He and Barbara moved here after he left office. The proposal to rename the airport was spearheaded by Democrat Bob Lanier. Considering all George Bush the elder has done for Houston and Texas, yes, I do think the airport renaming was appropriate.

In what way is this egocentric? In what way is it selfish?

By the way, people call the airport "Bush" more often than not. I get funny looks when I say "Intercontinental" same as I do when I properly pronounce San Fillipee instead of San Félipe. Oh, and the airport in DC is called Reagan National, even by locals.

Do you think the same way about Hobby Airport or do you call that one Houston Municipal?

Nope, because it’s been there longer than he’s been President and his father lives in Houston, so why would they call it Sr. or Jr?

I’m no Republican and DEFINITELY no fan of either Bush nor of Reagan. That said: most people DO refer to the former National Airport in DC as "Reagan National." Also, the former President Bush wasn’t half the failure that his son has been. Again, he’s nowhere near my list of best presidents, but I think that solely by virtue of his being a president that didn’t completely embarrass the country makes it appropriate to put his name on an airport or two. Also, it wasn’t the former president himself that asked for the airport to be named in his honor. That was done by the Houston Airport System in concert with local authorities.
